Chaplain: The thoughts of a mother

By Allen Teal, Chaplain

“Mary quietly treasured these things in her heart and often thought about them.” Luke 2:19

Traditionally, May is the month to remember mom. Cards, notes, gifts, flowers and special meals are some of the ways that we honor our mothers. The Bible gives insight into why our moms are so special.

1.MOMS NOTICE AND REMEMBER THE LITTLE THINGS.

Almost invariably, our mother recorded the milestones of our infancy and childhood in a baby book. She made note of the first time we rolled over, took a step, spoke a word and cut a tooth. Mom also kept a lock of our baby hair. Even more than these developmental markers, your mother remembers the glint in your eye as she looked at you.

2.MOMS TREASURE THOSE THEY LOVE.

In Matthew 6:21, Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” If a mom can give affection, she will shower it on her children. Her memories and love of her offspring fill her heart. Everything about the birth of Jesus must have felt overwhelming to Mary. The Bible tells us that she “treasured these things in her heart.”

MOMS OFTEN THINK ABOUT THEIR FAMILY.

Your mother holds you in her thoughts and probably worries about you sometimes. If you are a parent, you understand that all of the thinking and planning that goes into raising a child is not easy to set aside when they are grown. You may present as a full-grown adult, but your mom cannot forget you were once her child. Give her some room to keep being your mom. Remember that the fifth commandment tells us to “honor your father and mother.”

God uses a mother to illustrate his love for us by asking a question that would be difficult to answer in the affirmative: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” (Isaiah 45:15).
