Chaplain: The contrasts of life

By Allen Teal, Chaplain

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, "I find no pleasure in them." (Ecclesiastes 12:1, NIV).

March hosts three major days this year. March 6 is Ash Wednesday, which marks the first day of Lent. The twentieth is the Vernal or Spring Equinox that marks the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. Finally, March 21 begins the Jewish festival of Purim that celebrates their deliverance during the days of Esther. The first is solemn, the second is usually lightly noted, and the third is a time to be joyful. Taken together, they represent patterns that we all go through.

Life brings serious events to all.

Often, serious times come in difficult moments in our lives. We think of funerals, family issues, and health problems. Introspection and sadness may be our frequent companions. The painfulness we experience may cause us to grow and become stronger, or they may push us toward giving up on life. It’s at this fork in our path that the choices we make can be critical for our future. God has promised to walk with us through every station of life. Trusting Him can give you the power to weather every stormy time of life.

Sometimes life is just life.

Much of our life on this planet consists of simply going from one day to the next without any type of major event either good or bad. During times like this, our lives may seem to be on autopilot. It is much like driving down an interstate highway. We move quickly from place to place without incident. It is important to use this as an opportunity to prepare because life will not always be this way. Accomplish this by strengthening friendships and family ties, saving money for emergencies, and spending more time working on your spiritual walk with God.

Watch for the good times.

Every life will take an upswing along the way. Days will string together where everything seems to work to your benefit. The Bible says laughter is like a medicine. Take advantage of “up” times to allow happiness and joy to fill your life. Share your good fortune with others. These are moments that can be recalled and celebrated when you face hard places. Make a point during these opportunities to give thanks to God for his blessings in your life.
