Chaplain: 3 reasons for personal renewal

By Allen Teal, Chaplain

Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. (1 Corinthians 4:16, NIV).

May 4 is designated as “Renewal Day.” It’s supposed to be a day to renew old friendships, furniture, magazine subscriptions, or about anything else. In Christian lives, the spiritual life can be renewed daily. Consistent renewal is needed because:

1. Some days are not great.

All of us have bad days. These can leave us down, unhappy and fatigued. Whether we call it grace, help or strength for the day, we can find the energy to pick ourselves up and go on by seeking the Lord. His presence gives us the perspective we need to see that one bad day does not have to lead to more of the same. Tomorrow can bring new energy and fresh opportunities.

2. We need more stamina.

Life is no sprint. As days stretch into weeks, months and years, endurance can be tested. Just as the distance runner needs a refreshing drink of water along the course, Christians need to be renewed at regular intervals. The Apostle Paul spoke of receiving a daily refreshing regardless of what he was facing. This provided the courage and stamina for him to keep moving forward.

3. Others need us to be strong.

Even if we are having a great day or a positive period, those we love and live near may not be so fortunate. Their lives may seem like a series of problems and dead ends. At those times, our friends, family and acquaintances can use our support. We cannot give what we do not have. So, it is important that we allow our relationship with God to renew our hope and strength each day.

Renewal comes when our faith in God remains strong. Daily prayer coupled with regular study of the scriptures reinforces our ability to trust God. Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” We are also strengthened by gathering with others to worship the Lord. And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. 25 Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25, NIV).
